Viacom CEO Supports 'Protect IP Act'
Type: News

Viacom Inc. President and CEO Philippe Dauman released a statement in connection with the U.S. Senate introduction of the Protect IP Bill, which aims to fight the impact of online infringement and counterfeiting on American jobs.

"The introduction of the Protect IP Bill today is an important step forward in the fight to secure American jobs. We appreciate the continued efforts of Senators Leahy, Grassley, Hatch and others to raise awareness of this critical issue, and look forward to working with Congress as they enact legislation to produce effective solutions to the threats of online counterfeiting and infringement.
"Online counterfeiting and infringement are serious and growing threats that have the potential to undermine America's economic resurgence. With increasing sophistication, criminal elements are infecting the internet ecosystem with illegal, parasitic websites that steal the hard work of millions and expose innocent users to a spectrum of significant, real-world dangers.

"In order to combat these evolving threats, law enforcement must be given the necessary tools to continue to effectively protect American workers. Across the entertainment industry alone, more than 140,000 jobs have already been lost due to online piracy, and other IP-dependent industries are equally at risk."

Viacom is an entertainment brand.

FED:Oppn economic credibility in tatters: Wong

CANBERRA, Dec 1 AAP - Finance Minister Penny Wong says the federal opposition's economic
credibility is in tatters after the accountants who costed its 2010 election policies
were found to have breached professional standards.

A tribunal of the Institute of Chartered Accountants fined two Perth-based accountants
$5000 each because their costings of coalition policies failed to contain a statement
that the procedures performed do not constitute either an audit or a review.

"This is despite the fact that Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey has repeatedly claimed the
dodgy costings were an audit," Senator Wong said in a statement on Thursday.

"The tribunal's findings clearly indicate the coalition sought to conceal its true
costings from the Australian public, refusing to have them properly costed by the Departments
of Finance and Treasury."

Senator Wong said the opposition plans to do the same again by hiding their policy
costings at the next election.

She said at the last election the opposition were found to have a $10.6 billion black
hole in their election policy costings, and since then Mr Hockey has made clear the coalition
needs to make $70 billion in cuts just to get to the starting line.

"The Australian public deserve the right to scrutinise opposition polices," she said.

She said the opposition must commit their election policies to Treasury, Finance or
the new independent Parliamentary Budget Office for costing.

"Anything less than that is a sham," she said.

Senator Wong and Mr Hockey will participate in "The Fiscal Debate" being hosted by
the Australian Financial Review in Sydney on Thursday.

--AOL to lay off 900

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

11 March 2011 - The continuing transformation of AOL (NYSE:AOL) into a content producing and advertising business will lead to the elimination of another 900 positions, or about 20% of the group's workforce, the Financial Times reported.
Tim Armstrong, chief executive of the US Internet company, announced the redundancies yesterday, describing the decision as a very difficult one and painful on a personal level. He went on to add that no further job cuts were imminent but steered clear of any long-term commitment to preserving staff numbers.

AOL is laying off 200 US employees, who have become redundant after the February acquisition of blog network the Huffington Post. The Indian workforce will be reduced by 400 employees, while a further 300 will remain engaged with AOL projects but transferred to other companies.

AOL's new direction has resulted in over 2,000 job cuts and voluntary redundancies between November and January. The latest staff pruning round will leave the company with a global workforce slightly exceeding 4,000.

Vic: $3.8 billion torn from coffers in election year budget

Treasury figures show the Victorian government has to plug a 3.8-billion dollar hole
in state coffers .. as it prepares its election year budget.

The figures reveal for the first time state revenues will have hemorrhaged almost four
billion dollars by 2012 .. based on forward estimates set in 2008 before the downturn.

Treasurer JOHN LENDERS says the state is over the worst of the financial crisis ..

but the economy is still fragile.

Flagging a budget centred on health and police .. the treasurer's ruled out any tax
increases this year .. but he's also scuppered hopes of tax relief .. saying it's highly

Qld: Fraud charges could follow CMC inquiry

Fraud charges may arise from an investigation into a four million dollar government
grant to the Queensland Rugby Union.

Counsel assisting a Crime and Misconduct Commission inquiry .. RUSSELL PEARCE .. said
it appears fraud may have been committed by QRU CEO KEN FREER .. former policy adviser
to then sports minister JUDY SPENCE .. SIMON TUTT .. and possibly the QRU itself.

In previous hearings .. the CMC inquiry heard the grant was improperly used for QRU
running costs .. not bricks-and-mortar as the QRU claimed.

It also heard part of the grant was paid up-front .. contrary to guidelines and 200
thousand dollars of the grant was ordered by Mr TUTT to be diverted to the University
of Queensland Rugby Club .. of which Mr TUTT was a board member.

Mr PEARCE said there are a number of grounds for the commission to find fraud has been
committed and there's also scope for disciplinary action against senior public servant
CRAIG MATHESON .. who played a leading role in ensuring the ministerial submission was
formulated in accordance with Mr TUTT's wishes.

A CMC report on the matter is due after January 22.

FED: Australia to provide closure for Tongan ferry victims

CANBERRA, Aug 7 AAP - Australia will help recover the bodies of victims of Tonga's
ferry tragedy, providing closure to families affected by the disaster that is thought
to have claimed more than 60 lives.

An Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force team will be deployed to Tonga on
Friday, where 62 people are believed to have died when a ferry sank off the island's coast.

Rescue boats have managed to pick up 53 survivors and the bodies of two people, while
hope fades for the remainder of the 117 passengers who were on board the MV Princess Ashika.

An Australian C-130 Hercules aircraft will also be sent to assist, as well as medical
staff and divers, following a formal request from the Tongan government for help.

Defence Minister John Faulkner said the ferry sank in a relatively shallow area, 86km
from the Tongan capital of Nuku'alofa, aiding the recovery effort.

"As the depth of water appears to be relatively shallow where the ferry is located,
it should be possible for the Royal Australian Navy Clearance Dive team to operate," he
said.

"The recovery of the bodies is an unpleasant but necessary job, but it will allow families
the opportunity to farewell their loved ones."

Most of the passengers feared dead were women and children sleeping indoors on lower
decks when the boat became unbalanced and rolled quickly just before midnight on Wednesday.

New Zealand has also promised to help with victim identification and to compile a formal
accident report.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who wrapped up the Pacific Island Forum on Thursday, said
he and his fellow leaders had been very distressed at hearing the news.

"This is a large human tragedy for what is, at the end of the day, a small community,"

Mr Rudd said.

It is believed to be Tonga's worst ferry disaster in 30 years.

Vic: Kenworth Trucks to cut 80 manufacturing workers

MELBOURNE, Aug 26 AAP - Kenworth Trucks has announced it will cut 80 manufacturing
staff from its Melbourne factory in a further blow to Australia's automotive industry.

The announcement comes just days after Ford Australia said it would cut up to 350 jobs,
or 15 per cent of its Australian manufacturing workforce, by November because of slow
large-car sales.

The cuts at Kenworth Trucks will be made from September 5, management told the 1,100
staff at its Bayswater factory in Melbourne's outer east, News Limited newspapers report
today.

Kenworth spokesman Robert Brierley blamed the slowing economy, high fuel prices and
interest rate hikes for the job losses.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union shop steward at Kenworth Les Takacs said the
job losses would cut production from 23 trucks a day to eight.

The company had cut 380 contractors since last year, he said.

Fed: Kidman philosophical about response to Golden Compass

By Kim Christian

SYDNEY, Dec 16 AAP - Nicole Kidman is philosophical about how her fans will judge her
new film, The Golden Compass, which premiered in Sydney tonight.

Nearly a thousand devoted fans braved heavy rain and stormy conditions to catch a glimpse
of the Australian superstar before the film's local premiere at the State Theatre.

Traffic was closed on Market St and parts of Pitt St in central Sydney as Kidman and
her entourage took centre stage.

The Hollywood actress, wearing a striking metallic silver pant suit with black pumps,
chatted freely with fans and the press following mixed reviews of her film in the US.

Kidman plays a supporting role as scholar and explorer Marisa Coulter in the fantasy
adventure based on the novel of the same name, the first tale in author Philip Pullman's
trilogy.

Kidman said she would leave it up to the audience to decide.

"I don't know, I just make films, you know, some of them work, some of them don't,
and I guess I don't think about whether something is going to be liked or disliked. My
instinct tells me it's the right thing to do," Kidman told AAP.

"You win some, you lose some.

"But I love what I do.

"Hopefully, that bleeds into it over the course of a career."

The Oscar winner said she was happy to make a film in which a little girl was the protagonist.

And she said her decision to star in the fantasy film came after Pullman wrote her a letter.

"I mean, my decisions are so erratic. I just choose off the cuff a lot of times, but
primarily this was because Philip Pullman wrote me an amazing letter telling me that when
he was writing the novels he had me in mind," Kidman said.

"So that's hard to turn down. He's such a good novelist.

"I thought it was a really intelligent piece of cinema."

Kidman is equally happy to be spending Christmas with her family in Australia - and
not to be working.

Her latest project, the Baz Luhrmann-directed epic Australia, which also stars Hugh
Jackman, wraps up on Wednesday after nine months of filming.

"It will nice not to be working," she said.

She said Luhrmann, who arrived late for today's premiere, was her "creative soul mate"

and she felt comfortable working on the film.

"I love working with him and I feel very safe," she said.

"I've got to see my country in a way that I would never have been able to see it. You
know, camping out in Kununurra, going to Kakadu. And you sort of talk about it, but you
rarely do that stuff."

But she could not commit to moving back to her home country full time.

"I mean you have to have a sort of gypsy life when you're married to a musician (Keith
Urban), so I'll be traipsing around on a tour bus most of next year," Kidman said.

"I'm committed to coming back and doing another film here at some stage."

The Golden Compass opens on December 26 and stars Dakota Blue Richards, Eva Green and
Daniel Craig.

NSW: 1000 evacuated from Campbelltown Mall after ceiling failure

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - Hundreds shoppers were evacuated from a shopping mall at Campbelltown
in Sydney's southwest when a ceiling caved in following a torrential downpour around lunchtime
today.

The second floor ceiling of Campbelltown Mall, which covers an area of 400 metres by
150 metres, partially collapsed around 12.20pm (AEDT).

A NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said about 1,000 people, shoppers and also workers, were
evacuated from the two storey mall.

"There's been numerous ceiling collapses throughout the top level and a large amount
of water is covering about 40 per cent of the floor area," the spokesman said.

"At this stage no injuries have been reported and we're currently awaiting the arrival
of council engineers to determine the structural damage to the building."

Parts of the mall have been sandbagged and six fire brigade pumps are working to flush
water from the complex.

Ambulance officers and police are on standby.

Fed: Romijn draws on own break-up for new film role

Fed: Romijn draws on own break-up for new film role

By Jonathon Moran, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, Aug 25 AAP - The break-up of her own marriage helped American actor Rebecca
Romijn get in character for her latest film role.

Romijn worked on Man About Town 18 months after her high-profile split from fellow
actor John Stamos after six years of marriage.

Man About Town tells of a troubled showbusiness couple, played by Ben Affleck and Romijn,
living in Hollywood.

"I worked on the movie shortly after the downfall of my own marriage which was a really
painful experience and so of course you draw from your own personal experiences to an
extent," Romijn told AAP from Los Angeles.

"I definitely identified with that pain, any time a marriage falls apart it is a very
very painful experience."

In Man About Town, Affleck plays Hollywood agent Jack Giamoro who discovers his model
wife Nina is cheating on him with his top client.

"It is meant to be a bit of a satire but it is not that far off base," explained Romijn, 33.

"There are some characters out here (in Hollywood) that are just as nutty as any of
the characters in the movie. It is a pretty insane world. You come across all kinds of
characters out here, it is amazing."

Man About Town was written and directed by Mike Binder, who also stars in the film.

The cast also features John Cleese, Amber Valletta, Bai Ling, Adam Goldberg and Jerry
O'Connell - Romijn's real life fiance.

"It was really funny being on set together," said Romijn, of working with O'Connell.

"He was cast separately from me and completely coincidentally."

Romijn didn't have to audition for Man About Town and jumped at the chance to work
with Binder, whose previous film The Upside of Anger was highly acclaimed.

"I had known Mike for a number of years before and I really trusted him.

"None of the characters are perfect, sometimes you hate them and sometimes you love
them and that is how real life is."

Playing Nina Giamoro was also a totally different role to anything Romijn - who last
worked on the X-Men movies - had explored before.

Her X-Men character, Mystique, was a mutant bad-girl, and her costume was painted onto her body.

"Variety is the spice of life, you never want to play the same character over and over
again," she said.

"Coming from the Mystique character in the X-Men movies, it is nice to play something
completely different - and where I actually get to wear wardrobe."

Romijn, pronounced Romaine, was born and raised in California to a Dutch furniture-making
father and American English teacher mother.

She studied music at the University of California before dropping out to pursue a career
in modelling.

Romijn began at the top, moving to Paris to pose for the front cover of French Elle
magazine, and going on to model for the likes of Sports Illustrated, Christian Dior and
Victoria's Secret.

She got her acting break with a guest spot on hit comedy series Friends, and her first
lead film role was 2002's Femme Fatale with Antonio Banderas.

Since then, she's starred in the X-Men series, as well as The Punisher, The Alibi and Godsend.

She's also believed to be in discussions to star in a fourth X-Men film and is rumoured
to be in the running to play Wonder Woman in a big budget feature.

"I look for different types of roles, mostly roles that are slightly flawed," said Romijn.

"I am not really interested in playing pretty girl arm candy and I have gotten some
nice little opportunities."

She's starred opposite some of Hollywood's hottest leading men, including Australian
Hugh Jackman, and has been photographed on plenty of red carpets.

But Romijn insists she leads a normal life.

"I don't ever want to get swallowed up by the wrong parts of it (Hollywood)," she said.

"That is why it is nice to date another actor, you get to bounce it off somebody else,
you get a partner in crime."

She's also not too keen on talking about her private life, although she reads about
it a lot on the internet and in magazines.

For the record, her wedding to O'Connell will be low-key.

"We are not going to have a big wedding, we will do something very impromptu," she said.

"They report new wedding plans for us every couple of weeks it seems."

Romijn's not interested in leading a party life.

"I like to try and keep it as real as possible because it is a bizarre world," she said.

"There are the type of people that go and try to be photographed as much as possible
and then there's another type of person that doesn't necessarily want that.

"Nobody is right, it is just the way you choose to live in this bizarre world called Hollywood."

** Man About Town is released nationally on August 31.
