FRENCH PANEL DESCRIBES `STUNNING' WWII LOOTING.(MAIN)

PARIS -- Calling the extent of wartime looting ``stunning,'' France on Monday acknowledged that $1.3 billion in assets was confiscated from Jews during World War II -- including 50,000 businesses -- but that most property and money was returned to survivors or their heirs.

The 3,000-page report, prepared by a special government commission and headed by former French resistance fighter Jean Matteoli, is France's answer to charges that the nation has been unwilling to face its own role in the Holocaust.
